What is the Inner Strength Teacher Training?
The Inner Strength teen mindfulness teacher training is an 80 hour program to enable you to teach the valuable tools of mindfulness and developmental thinking to high school students. The Inner Strength System(TM) is a unique mindfulness school program which teaches adolescents powerful and evidence-based focus, stress reduction, and compassion tools, all set in a framework of cultural and physiological development. Teens learn to see their experience in a larger context, developing important flexibility and resilience of thinking, critical to 21st century learning. They become archaeologists of themselves, learning to explore their personal experience as they feel it and as a result of 300 million years of influence. These tools and perspectives make all the difference, turning a life burdened by overwhelm into a life filled with curiosity and interest.
In the Inner Strength Teacher Training, you will learn how to teach the 12-week Inner Strength program. You will also receive ongoing support once you begin bringing these tools into the classroom. The Inner Strength Foundation runs over 50 programs per year in the Philadelphia School System. Successful graduates may apply to become a teacher for the Inner Strength Foundation.

Inner Strength Teacher Training Details
The Teacher Training is designed for optimal support. You will learn the techniques and perspectives, practice teaching, and participate in ongoing teacher’s calls once you begin teaching. The goal of this program is to impart in-depth training and ensure a very high caliber of instruction in the schools. Additionally, this training is designed to grow a supportive collective of school mindfulness teachers who support each other’s creativity and growth.
Indepth Practical, Experiential & Philosophical Training
The Inner Strength Teen Program Teacher Training includes an in-person training, teleconference & webinar sessions, 3 virtual mindfulness retreats, 30 half-hour virtual guided meditation practice sessions by video-conference, and access to weekly professional development teleconference calls once you start teaching.
The training includes conceptual overview, background reading, practice teaching sessions using the 100 page Teacher’s Manual, and mindfulness sessions to explore your own understanding of the practice.

FOUNDATIONS OF MINDFULNESS

In this 8 week series of live webinars, guided meditations, partner-practice, and supplemental video lessons, you will learn how to teach 7 foundational mindfulness practices to teens.
Through a series of live teleconferences with ample time for questions, breakout discussions and one-on-one practice sessions, readings, and quizzes you will receive solid training to being incorporating the principles and practices of mindful contemplation in the classroom.
More and more of our students arrive in the classroom carrying the effects of trauma and stress. These issues affect their ability to pay attention, learn, self-regulate, and develop wholesome relationships with their adults mentors and their peers. The Inner Strength System(TM) teaches students 7 evidence-based mindfulness tools that will help them de-stress, self-regulate, and cultivate important social-emotional skills. These tools are taught in a developmental context. Students learn to de-personalize some of the negative experiences they may have had, allowing them to let go of mis-placed responsibility, guilt, or frustration.
While students are experience greater access to knowledge, connection, and communication than any generation before, the advent of new technologies has also brought its own shadow. Students are experiencing increasing levels of distraction, attention deficit, cyber-bullying, and self-harm.
Students now more than ever stand to benefit from the time-honored tools of mindfulness to access inner strength and cultivate outer stability. They gain self-confidence and independence, and cultivate positive life-long learning habits for the successful achievement of their higher goals.
By the end of Inner Strength Teacher Training:
— You will have a solid understanding of the different mindfulness tools.
— You will understand which tools are more appropriate for different classroom situations and desired results.
— You will have practiced teaching with a partner and received constructive feedback.
— You will complete a proficiency tele-exam with an instructor.
Successful teaching of mindfulness to students rests on your own familiarity with the practice. Incorporated into the training is half hour mindfulness practice sessions Mon-Fri 8 AM US ET.
Part I is required to participate in Part II of the training. Successful completion of both sections (mindfulness and the developmental perspective) is required to receive your Inner Strength System Teacher’s Certificate of Training.

One of the biggest stressors for teens is their social life. With the advent of social media, this is even more challenging as they are exposed and vulnerable in new and hard to manage ways.
Teens are more than willing to learn ways to be in positive relationships with their friends and peers without compromising their individuality and their self-respect.
They also benefit greatly from learning specific tools to be kinder to themselves.
You will learn how to teach teens to:
— Recognize whether they are practicing kindness or meanness to themselves.
— Grow their capacity to care for themselves and for others.
— Manage their responses and reactions so they find the most constructive way to respond when their feelings are heated.

The unique holistic perspective of the Inner Strength System(TM)
In Part II of the Inner Strength teacher training you will develop the understanding and ability to teach students to see their experience in a larger context.
You will learn how to:
— Give simple and graspable explanations for how teens can take more responsibility for themselves by understanding the neurological triggers that have developed over 300 million years.
— Guide students back into a simpler time in history, enabling them to appreciate the advances they benefit from and reduce the insecurity they feel in relationship to the complexity of modern culture.
— Integrate these tools with the practice of mindful exercises.
Teen benefit greatly from learning how to calm themselves and gain some emotional stability. Their sense of wonder and curiosity awakens when they start to feel empowered to engage with the culture, the world, and their feelings with the interest of a scientist. As students become explorers of their experience in a systematic way, they better understand how history or biology has a direct effect on them and how their learning can take on new meaning. In this day and age, with technology advancing so rapidly, we as educators are preparing students for a world none of us can imagine. Training teens to work with complexity and to think systemically prepares them to be flexible, resilient, and engaged and so be better able to succeed and realize their higher goals.

Brain Science & The Teen Brain
As sophisticated as we are, we are still influenced by our reptilian brain, which has been honed to trigger fight and fear responses for over 300 million years. The teen brain is also undergoing seismic chemical shifts, which influence judgement, perception, and responses. Learning about these physiological changes helps teens become responsible for themselves, and gain confidence during this turbulent stage of life.

Trauma Awareness, Diversity Training & Classroom Management
Learning how to teach and embody the values of mindful awareness. This requires conscious contemplation and discussion so we better understand our students and ourselves, and how we interact. In this section:
You will learn:
- How trauma affects students, how to identify and respond appropriately.
- To be aware of your own biases, triggers, and preferences.
- Appropriate classroom management techniques that go along with mindfulness values.
- How to collaborate with the classroom teachers when you encounter disruptive or disinterested students.
The Inner Strength System is a Comprehensive Training for Teen Mindfulness Instructors
Registration includes a copy of the 100+ page Mindfulness & Cultural Development Teacher’s Manual.This manual is included for participants of Part I & II and includes detailed lesson plans, additional resources for teachers, and teaching tools for the classroom.
